Tell me you’re sorry, Daddy

Tell Me You're Sorry, Daddy is the moving true story of one man's horrific campaign of abuse against his own daughter, which continued for more than seven years of her childhood, and has had effects which continue to this day.

32 years after the abuse began, Caryn Walker finally saw her father in court in 2011, charged with 24 counts of abuse against her. As she awaited the verdict, she looked at the man who robbed her of so many years, who never showed any remorse, and realised that she was the one who was strong, she was the survivor. Caryn knew that it was time for her to tell her full story - and that of her dead sister, Jennifer. Against all the odds, she fought. And she won.

I have struggled to think of anything suitable to write here straight after I'd read the book as I just had no words. I was/am disgusted at the way the children were let down (that's an understatement) by their meant to be 'parents'. I think it's important to say that victims/survivors of abuse never ever forget what happened (that's if they remember it all in the first place as the brain is very clever in sometimes blocking memories as mentioned in this book by Caryn's brother). The suffering these children suffered is absolutely beyond heartbreaking. And I'm so glad that Caryn was able to write this to raise awareness and hopefully stop abuse that is happening all over. So brave to write a book that must have taken so much time and pain to get it together and dragged up horrendous memories. The dedication to Jenny is so heartfelt and I can hear the love Caryn had (and still has) for her sister. There is a lovely bit in the book (I took a photo of it) about the moo light being a sign from Jenny to Caryn that really touched me. You should be very proud of this achievement Caryn.

It’s so difficult to review a book like this. You can't say it was amazing or fantastic. This is a horrific and heartbreaking story, where you are introduced to the heinous behaviour and crimes of two people who should never have been given the privilege of parenthood, and the subsequent irreversible damage they inflicted on their children, the ripple effect of that which caused such long term damage. This lady, along with her siblings is so brave, and I'm so pleased she was able to carve out a life where she can take back some of what was taken and be able to tell her sisters story alongside her own, I'm so happy that despite the horrific damage caused, she now is able enjoy her own family and some semblance of peace and happiness.

Wow. I find it hard to find the words. A wonderfully honest account of the most horrific abuse, not only to Caryn and Jenny but also to their siblings. I felt a kind of numbness reading through what had happened, so hard to take in that this does actually happen. Getting to the court case is what broke me, Caryn having to relive every detail before strangers and the outpouring of love from Elroy and her brothers was so overpowering. This is a book that will stay in my mind for a long time. Caryn, believe me when I tell you that you were loved and worthy then, not by your parents but definitely by siblings, your extended family and your small group of friends and you are very much loved and worthy now.
